Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center College of Medicine
Outcomes, Challenges, and Resources
Outcomes
- Elementary School Science Center (ESSC) program growth. School districts are requesting the program and are successfully obtaining funding to implement the ESSC program in their elementary schools.
- Science Activity Modules (SAMs), a component of the ESSC program, is nearing completion. An assessment tool is being developed to first measure students existing science content knowledge within the topic. After the SAM is completed, a post-assessment with similar questions is administered to students to evaluate the improvement of student knowledge based on their SAM experiences. Preliminary results indicate an increase in student understanding of science concepts.
- Family Health Nights, a component of the ESSC program, is in development. A Family Health Night on Nutrition is completed and being field tested. Preliminary results indicate that a statistically significant difference occurred when testing all subjects (parents and students) pre vs. post Family Health Night experience. The Family Health Night was a success in showing that a short, hands-on activity for students and their parents is able to have a significant impact on the knowledge of nutrition of those participants.
