Outcomes, Challenges, and Resources
Outcomes
- Teachers need opportunities to share strategies for managing effective learning assessments including journals, lab reports, posters, portfolios, and oral presentations.
- Kits that are well designed and include everything needed for activities or experiments are essential to hands-on inquiry science. However, most schools do not have science budgets that support this kind of teaching.
Challenges
- Accommodating the expanding base of teachers, scientists, collaborators, etc. in our program generates growing challenges in maintaining effective communications.
- We need more effective mechanisms to document the impact of our program over time.
Resources
- The Spanish Flu and Its Legacy from the College Board is a curriculum piece which uses a case study approach to encourage interdisciplinary teaching and learning. This approach encompasses the disciplines of science, sociology, economics, history and literature. The case of the Spanish Flu engages students in solving a real problem with hands-on activities and develops critical thinking skills. Ordering information is available at http://www.collegeboard.org.
- The NIH Curriculum Supplement Series from NIH, BSCS, and Videodiscovery is standards-based series on Cell Biology and Cancer, Human Genetic Variation and Infectious Diseases. These curricula use current scientific data and inquiry-based activities to enhance student learning. These modules have extensive scientific background information and suggestions for implementing the materials in the classroom. The supplement series and accompanying CD-ROMs are available free from the NIH at http://science-education.nih.gov/
