Brigham and Women's Hospital
Outcomes, Challenges, and Resources
Outcomes
- Thirteen of the 15 students completed the one-year HHMI Biomedical Science Internship Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital in labs such as including Microbiology, the Center for Blood Research, Hematology, Rheumatology, Immunology and Allergy, Neurology and Lab Control.
- In analyzing pre- and post-program student surveys, students gained 38 new skills, most specific to the labs in which the students worked (e.g., cutting sections, counting mast cell colonies, performing ELISA, organizing slides, spinning and labeling specimens).
Challenges
- The erratic schedules of both a research lab and a high school student are difficult to manage, even with the most careful planning. Generous flexibility from the supervisors and the students was required to create and adjust a successful schedule.
- As many of the students are first-generation Americans, there was a significant language barrier to our ability to communicate one-on-one with some of the parents and families.
