Outcomes, Challenges, and Resources

Outcomes
Challenges
  • Funding. We have not yet been awarded a major grant for continuation of the HHMI-funded project
  • Balancing the need to accomplish specific projects funded by HHMI and other funders with other requests for help that are periferal to the funded projects.
Resources
  • Genetic Variation and Nicotine Addiction: Investigating How Genes Influence Smoking Behavior. Both student and teacher editions of this DNA sequencing module are available. This module uses an inquiry approach and DNA sequencing to engage students in understanding the biology of drug addiction and how genetic components might contribute to smoking behavior. The unit was developed by the NIDA-funded StarNet Project in conjunction with the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study. The student and teacher editions can be downloaded at http://hshgp.genome.washington.edu/teacher_resources/modules.htm.
  • Bloodline: Technology Hits Home. Noel Schwerin. 2003. One hour movie, 10 page discussion guide, and website. This "one hour documentary reveals how new life technologies are raising ethical, legal, and social dilemmas as cutting-edge science intersects with the law." Order a VHS copy of Bloodlines by e-mailing vhs@backbonemedia.org. Bloodlines webste: http://www.pbs.org/bloodlines.
