Outcomes, Challenges, and Resources
Outcomes
Challenges
- Senior students in the program, who have completed at least 160 hours of enrichment, are reluctant to participte during the senior year because of a desire to participate in other activities, including AP classes, studying for the ACT/SAT and preparing for AP tests. We now conduct half day workshops on preparing the college application and teach students to conduct WEB searches for scholarships to fund college/university. Students are introduced to online resources for scholarship funding including the San Diego Foundation Scholarship page. This assistance also influences students to apply to four-year institutions.
- The principal eliminated the science honors class that a COPC trained teacher began in the 2002-03 academic year. The honors class increased student enrollment in COPC (80 students) during that year. With the elimination of the class, enrollment decreased to the pre-honors class level of 65 students. We began to work with the principal to reinstate the course, however the school has now been assigned a new principal. We are working with our Regional Consortium Partners to begin to inform the new principal about the academic enrichment and School To Careers programs available at the school.
2) Loss of teacher stipends for the Teacher Training Program, resulted in no new teacher participants. Two teachers who were trained in the program in the 2002 year did participate in 2004.
