Outcomes, Challenges, and Resources

Outcomes
Challenges
  • Transitioning programs off the HHMI funding to other funding sources was a challenge. Specifically, Summer of Discovery, a one-week science camp for middle and high school students, became a fee-based program. The challenge of fundraising for scholarship dollars to provide a sliding fee for needy students and providing the same quality of program was a challenge. It was a bit of a withdrawal from the generous HHMI funding of past years. However, it worked. The program supported itself. It was a good feeling to receive checks from people who wanted to come to the program and we were able to maintain the same quality of program.
  • Transitioning programs into the institution was accomplished, but a challenge was making sure the program still was implemented this year, without HHMI funding and oversight to keep it moving forward. The project director re-learned the need for constant vigilance and follow up! It was great to know the programs were supported at the department, college and university level. What worked well is making sure the project, in this case a course, was part of the professor's course load requirements. This insured the project continuing, since he/she has to teach this to get credit in his/her evaluation.
Resources
  • Plan and organization to move a HHMI funded program to a fee-based program.
  • Curriculum and syllabus for Biology 110, a pre-service, inquiry-based science course.
