Outcomes, Challenges, and Resources


Outcomes
  • LabLion Program Growth: Fifteen LabLion Program sites have been implemented since last reporting period. School districts are requesting the program and are successfully obtaining funding to implement the LabLion Program in their elementary schools. Outside of Pennsylvania, the program has been licensed and is marketed by Cognitive Learning Systems as the LabLearner Program. Two schools in Memphis, Tennessee have implemented the LabLearner Program. The LabLearner Program is scheduled for implementation in a school district in North Carolina during the 2003-2004 school year.
  • LabLion Program Science Activity Modules were transformed into a comprehensive, standards-based, hands-on, inquiry based curriculum. Two versions of SAMs are now available for schools. Both versions will include additional resources such as flashcards, transparencies, and an assessment portfolio.
  • In this reporting period, 96% K-6 teachers stated that the SAMs increased their students? science content knowledge (n=196), 83% stated that their background knowledge and/or skills have been increased by using the SAMs (n=186), 74% stated that they used the SAMs as a tool for developing students? math skills (n=205), and 65% stated that they used the SAMs as a tool for developing students? literacy (n=197).
Challenges
  • Hiring and maintaining qualified K-12 educators to work within a College of Medicine setting. K-12 educators have more benefits working within a K-12 school system. Problem partly resolved by hiring educators as consultants and integrating a sabbatic program with school districts.
  • Being able to afford quality digital images and photographs for curriculum materials. High quality images and photographs of various animals, geographic locations, events and objects are essential when integrating social studies, math and language arts concepts into a curriculum.
  • Being able to afford qualified artists and graphic artists. Artists needed to produce developmentally appropriate quality diagrams, sketches and pictures for curriculum materials.

  • www.lab-learner.org is the website for Cognitive Learning Systems, Inc. Information on implementing the LabLion Program developed by The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine can be found at this site. The LabLion Program is called the ?LabLearner Program? outside of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
