The DCPS adopted the FOSS kit based program as the elementary science instructional materials based on CASE's work in the 15 DC ACTS elementary schools. Teachers now have science materials to teach through inquiry and investigation as presented in the National Science Education Standards.
CASE has developed a group of elementary mentor teachers in science and mathematics who provide leadership in their schools. Several mentor teachers have presented at national conferences and one was awarded the Presidential Award for Teaching Science and Mathematics at the elementary level.
The biggest challenge CASE faces is the difficulty in funding a program that provides professional development to DCPS teachers given the questions raised by funders about the school system's responsibility to provide professional development and inability to do so.
The financial uncertainty faced by CASE has resulted in some staff leaving for more secure jobs.
