Outcomes, Challenges, and Resources
Outcomes
Challenges
- Our major challenge is to obtain new funding to sustain the successful programs, such as BioTeach, that we currently offer.
- We would like to expand our programming to include science education outreach programs for elementary and middle school teachers and students. Our local schools offer very little hands-on laboratory experiences for middle school students and, as a result, the children lose interest in science. Better programs in the early grades would also improve perforance in the high school students.
Resources
- The website for UAB's Center for Community OutReach Development (CORD), www.uab.edu/cord, contains descriptions of our outreach programs, including K-12 science education programs for students and teachers; in-school science clubs; summer research programs; and field trip and extracurricular activites. Protocols for many of the programs are available on the website and any others may be obtained by contacting the program directors listed on the website.
- We have available copies of a video documentary sharing the heart of science education outreach programming, developed by UAB CORD, that takes place in McWane Center's LabSpace. Featured programs include 1) BioTeach, a 4 week-long summer teacher training course in molecular biology for high school biology teachers; 2) GENEius, a day-long experience in molecular biology for high school students and the major implementation program for BioTeach and 3) MyLab, a hands-on laboratory experience in biology designed for the general museum visitor.
