Outcomes, Challenges, and Resources

Outcomes
  • The successful development of a summer science curriculum aligned to school year curriculum that increased student interest and commitment to academic preparation for science.
  • The acceptance of the summer science program by students, teachers, school administrators, and parents as a highly valued and desirable activity.
  • The effective educational collaboration between a private university and urban school district with mutually defined interests and goals.
Challenges
  • Financially sustaining a residential summer science enrichment program requires a significant institutional commitment of resources above and beyond grant-funded programs. The per student cost is high (greater than $1000). The SCHOLAR program is currently funded by a combination of private and federal grants. Currently we are meeting these expenses in part through institutional "in-kind" contributions and grant resources. New funding streams will need to be identified. We are working with the Yale Development Office to identify prospective private funding sources, including gifts and contributions from Yale alumni.
  • Establishing continuity between summer and school year academic programs continues to be a challenge. To date, we have successfully merged into the summer curriculum key curriculum concepts directly relevant to the school year academic program. What remains to be accomplished programmatically is maintaining and strengthening peer-to-peer and student-to-program relationships beyond the summer into the academic year and after graduation. To effectively meet this need, the SCHOLAR program will require a full-time coordinator whose role extends beyond planning and administration of the summer science program.
Resources
  • http://www.med.yale.edu/omca/programs/hppi.htm The home website of programs and initiatives of the Yale-New Haven Health Professions Partnership Initiative of which SCHOLAR is a significant component. As noted on the website: Science Collaborative Hands On Learning and Research (SCHOLAR) - an integrated of school year and summer science enrichment activities which utilize Career High School faculty and Yale School of Medicine resources for collaborative educational experiences, including an intensive summer residential science program.
  • http://www.yale.edu/opa/v30.n33/story4.html A journalistic description from a Yale University publication that captures student and staff perspectives on the strengths of the SCHOLAR program.
