Challenges
- As the software developed and increasingly makes its way into the classrooms, the challenge becomes how to include all students in the dissemination efforts, not just those of early adopter teachers. Our approach has been to build district-wide trust and teacher technology capacity through not only science-related activities, but also through general technology training activities.
- Insuring comprehensive coverage and support across many grade levels remains a formidable challenge. Even the best simulations can become inappropriate outside of the grade level they were designed for. We find a need for more software at all grade levels.
Resources
- Approximately 150 science-related problem sets are available at the IMMEX website (http://www.immex.ucla.edu) that can be used by any teacher for their classrooms.
The IMMEX cases authored by our partner teachers have been performed by over 170,000 students nationwide over the past four years. They have served as the focus for multiple professional development and student activities and are generating information on how students approach and solve science problems. Five teacher participants have received advanced degrees based on their IMMEX-related activities.
- We have initiated the targeted development of online problem sets aligned with the Beckman kits hands-on activities. These are targeted for grades K-6 and are designed to expand and enrich the hands-on simulations.
We have begun district-wide adoption of online problem solving across a district of 27,000 students. Evaluations have shown that in such expansions, People Matter, Resources Matter, and Context Matters.
