The NEXUS Project

Join the Conversation

A growing consensus has emerged in the national community on needed reforms in undergraduate science education. This is reflected in several reports—the landmark Bio 2010 report from the National Academy of Sciences and the recent Vision and Change report from the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Science Foundation, for example—that focus on improving undergraduate science education to better prepare scientifically literate citizens as well as the next generation of scientists. Likewise, there is agreement that changes in medical education are needed, and any difference in science education at the nation’s colleges and universities will impact the way that premedical students are prepared for medical school. So coordinating medical education across undergraduate and graduate levels is vital.

In the context of this broader discussion, the Association of American Medical Colleges recently launched a review of the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), the first formal review of this important component of medical school admissions. The committee, called MR5, is taking into account many different points of view, including the 2009 AAMC-HHMI report Scientific Foundations for Future Physicians. Vigorous discussion about medical education reform and the impact of the committee’s recommendations has ensued among educators and advisors across the medical and science education spectrum.  In the midst of this important national conversation, NEXUS partners are engaged in learning how to improve premedical training and introductory science education through competency-based reforms in undergraduate science curricula.
