Medical Research Fellows Program

Scientific Meetings and Other Enrichment Opportunities

You'll have numerous opportunities throughout your fellowship year to take part in enrichment activities and become part of the community of Medical Fellows.

MED FELLOWS REGIONAL GROUPS

At regional meetings and other events, you can share your research interests with other fellows, and receive career advice from program alumni and prominent physician-scientists. Regional group events have included an HHMI investigator lunch/lecture series, regional symposia with talks by renowned researchers, dinners at faculty members’ homes, informal talks by Fellows, a holiday party and other social events.

Med Fellows with Huda Zohgbi
Medical Fellows meet with HHMI investigator Huda Zoghbi for a physician-scientist discussion session at the HHMI Science Meeting at Janelia.

HHMI SCIENCE MEETING

You’ll have a chance to interact with HHMI investigators and learn about their latest findings by attending a science meeting at HHMI headquarters or the Janelia Farm Research Campus. The HHMI science meetings are not open to the public so this is a unique experience, which is often a highlight of the Fellows’ HHMI research year.

Ed Stone
HHMI investigator Ed Stone talks about his findings in inherited retinal degenerative disease research and offers career advice on the physician-scientist career path to the Med Fellows at their end-of-year scientific meeting.

STUDENT CONFERENCES

In the fall or winter of your fellowship year, you will come to HHMI headquarters in Chevy Chase, Maryland, to attend the Clinical Investigator Student Trainee Forum at the NIH. During this two-day meeting, you'll have a chance to interact with other students in year-long research training programs, learn about research underway from leading biomedical investigators, and gain practical tips for success in academic careers in clinical and translational research. At the end of your fellowship year, you will return to HHMI headquarters to present your research at the annual Fellows’ meeting and to foster the relationships you developed earlier in the year.

SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCES

HHMI encourages you to attend a conference in your field during your HHMI fellowship year, particularly if you are presenting your work. HHMI research allowance funds can be used to help support your conference attendance.

Alumni Perspectives
David Lin   The HHMI science meeting was one of the capstones of my research year. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear from and speak with some of the world's most renowned scientists and to get a survey of what is going on at the cutting-edge of my research field. I think that all the Medical Fellows who attended would agree that we were inspired in that we really felt that we were part of something exciting and larger than any one of us individually.
