YEAR-LONG PROGRAM AT JANELIA
Eligibility, Financial Support, and Application Process

ELIGIBILITY

• Student in good standing at a medical, dental, or veterinary school located in the United States
• Do not have to be a U.S. citizen but have to be eligible to work with an appropriate visa
• Cannot be enrolled in a combined medical, dental, or veterinary/Ph.D. program (e.g., M.D./Ph.D.) or Ph.D., or Sc.D. program, or have a Ph.D. or Sc.D. in a laboratory-based biological science
• Strong record of research accomplishment and commitment

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

• Annual compensation of $29,000
• Medical and dental insurance; vision insurance optional
• Furnished on-campus housing at Janelia (includes one parking space, utilities, cable TV, internet access, fitness center, dining facilities and other on-site amenities)
• Round-trip moving expense reimbursement up to $1,500 (for personal belongings, not furniture)
• Research allowance of $5,500 for research-related enrichment activities (Med Fellows regional events, HHMI investigator meetings, scientific conferences), research-related books and courses

LOAN DEFERMENT

• If you are not matriculated at your school during your research year, HHMI can complete education-related loan deferment forms for you.
• Discuss your plans with the registrar and financial aid office at your school.

• Two-step application process with an earlier deadline for initial prescreening application
• Interviews for selected candidates at Janelia
• Candidates progressing past interview stage complete remainder of Medical Fellows application with Janelia mentor

• Remaining applicant’s components (including research proposal)
• Mentor’s components (and co-mentor, if applicable)

• Note: You may not concurrently have two Medical Research Fellows applications in the HHMI Competition System (e.g., a Medical Research Fellows Program at Janelia application and a standard Medical Research Fellows Program application). However, you may apply to the standard Medical Research Fellows Program, with a mentor at another fellowship institution, if you receive notification that your Janelia application is not progressing to the next stage of the competition.

TIMELINE

• November 1, 2012 — Prescreening application deadline
• Late November/early December — interviews for selected candidates
• December 10, 2012 — Interviewees notified of outcome
• January 11, 2013, 2:00 p.m. ET — Application deadline
• March 15, 2013 — Award notification via e-mail
• March 29, 2013, 3:00 p.m. ET — Award acceptance deadline
• Summer 2013 — Fellowship begins between May 1 and September 1
