HHMI investigator Chris Walsh talks with Michael Coulter about his work investigating mutations in recessive genes implicated in Autism Spectrum Disorders, which may aid in identifying pathways for potential new therapies.
HHMI investigator Elizabeth Engle reviews Sheena Chew's work characterizing neural development in the TUBB3 knockout mouse model and potential implications for a spectrum of neurological disorders.
Medical Fellow Katie Cook Suozzi talks with her mentor, HHMI investigator Elaine Fuchs about her work on the role of the adenomatous polyposis coli in epidermal development and hair follicle morphogenesis.
Tasha Larman discusses her data with her mentors, HHMI investigator Christine Seidman and Jonathan Seidman. Her project uses next-generation sequencing technology to investigate the role of mitochondrial mutations in the energetic abnormalities of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Medical Research Fellows Program
YEAR-LONG PROGRAM
Two options to immerse yourself in a year of research:
Conduct research at any academic or nonprofit institution in the U.S., except the NIH, or at K-RITH in South Africa. For the fellowships in the U.S., you choose your own mentor and develop your basic, translational, or applied research project. For the year of research in South Africa, you may work with selected mentors at K-RITH.
Plus, our partnership initiatives with other funders support fellowship research in specific areas:
- Basic research on TB or HIV in South Africa (K-RITH);
- Inherited retinal degenerative disease research (Foundation Fighting Blindness);
- Duchenne muscular dystrophy research (Duchenne Research Fund);
- Preclinical research in interventional radiology (Society of Interventional Radiology Foundation);
- Epilepsy research (CURE-Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy); and
- Veterinary student research (Burroughs Wellcome Fund).

Since first applying for an HHMI fellowship more than ten years ago, I've believed that the hybrid position offers unique and rewarding opportunities…The patients in my clinical program motivate me to research the mechanisms of brain-tumor development, and my laboratory research addresses basic questions about the human brain and brain tumors.…
