Medical Research Fellows Program
YEAR-LONG PROGRAM AT AN ACADEMIC OR NONPROFIT RESEARCH INSTITUTION
About the Program
- Established in 1989 with the goal of strengthening and expanding the nation’s pool of future physician-scientists and medically-trained researchers
- A year of basic, translational or applied biomedical research at any academic or nonprofit research institution in the U.S., except the National Institutes of Health
- Research can be done abroad if the mentor is affiliated with a U.S. institution (on faculty)
- Mentor selection and research project proposal are key components of the application
- More than 1,400 students have participated in the program since its inception
- Each year, more than 200 students apply to the program for 66 positions (or more based upon additional Fellows supported through partnership initiatives)
STATISTICS
- For the 2012-2013 academic year:
- 226 applicants from 68 schools
- 71 accepted from 27 schools; 24 work at an institution other than their own school
- 2 funded by the Foundation Fighting Blindness
- 2 funded by HHMI’s Janelia Farm Research Campus
- Year in school:
- 55% participating after second year
- 42% participating after third year
PROGRAM BENEFITS
As an HHMI Medical Fellow, you will:
- focus on research without the distraction of full-time coursework;
- become part of a community of Medical Fellows through regional meetings and other events;
- gain insight into a diverse range of projects and receive career advice from program alumni and other prominent physician-scientists;
- interact with HHMI investigators at a science meeting at HHMI’s headquarters or the Janelia Farm Research Campus and learn about their latest findings;
- share your research and network with other trainees and renowned biomedical investigators at two student conferences in the Washington, D.C., area;
- attend scientific conferences in your field and present your work;
- spend a year evaluating whether research should be part of your career.
