Physician-Scientist Early Career Award
Since 2006, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute provided early career support to exceptional physician-scientists through its Physician-Scientist Early Career program. This program helped launch the academic careers of 63 promising scientists, all alumni of the HHMI-NIH Research Scholars and HHMI Research Training Fellowships programs. Each awardee received up to $375,000 over a five year period, and many have used this support to help them compete successfully for NIH RO1 grants.
In light of the economic downturn, HHMI discontinued the Physician-Scientist Early Career Award in 2009. Current awardees will be supported through the end of their grants, but we will not be holding another competition to award new grants.
We know that early career physician-scientists still face challenges, and will continue to explore ways to help researchers work at the border between science and medicine.
