BioEd Online
This website, a comprehensive “teacher’s aid” for biology from the Baylor College of Medicine Center for Educational Outreach, provides educational content, lab techniques, and teaching strategies in a variety of useful formats. Streaming video presentations on such topics as the cell, diversity of life (including viruses and infectious diseases), heredity, and the human organism serve as content reviews or updates. A slide library, which contains collections of peer-reviewed and annotated PowerPoint slide sets on topics of interest to biology teachers, allows teachers to customize lesson plans. In addition to its slide sets on cloning, stem cells, genomes, and human body systems, the slide library also contains several new slide sets from scientists at the National Space Biomedical Research Institute on space-related health risks, such as the effects of radiation on the body. A Teacher Resources section offers inquiry-based, field-tested, standards-aligned activities and supplemental materials—sorted by topic and grade level—that can be downloaded as PDFs for use in the classroom. The site also contains science news, “hot topics," and new developments in research, such as "The Pathway to Genomic Medicine," a video presentation with slides. This website was a recent winner of The Science Prize for Online Resources in Education, which identifies and promotes the best online materials available to science educators.

Summary: The Baylor College of Medicine is located in Houston, Texas. Its HHMI-funded initiatives include:
- The SELF (Science Education Leadership Fellows) program, which pairs experienced science teachers with Baylor postdoctoral researchers and graduate students in science education improvement teams. These teams help guide the process of science education reform in the Houston Independent School District’s (HISD) elementary schools; and
- An award-winning website, BioEd Online, and a more recently created website, K8 Science, which provide a host of peer-reviewed teaching resources and teacher training for biology teachers nationwide.
