Bates Bioinformatics Tutorial
This tutorial from Bates College gives students a good start in using bioinformatics—the acquisition, storage, arrangement, identification, analysis, and communication of information related to biology. The tutorial asks users to compare the molecular structure of an enzyme, alpha amylase, in three organisms (corn, oyster, and human). Students learn to use the resources of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), which contains gene sequence databases, software tools for analyzing genome data, and other valuable information. Students access DNA and protein sequence online databases to find the gene sequences they need and compare them using BLAST, a tool to help users find regions of similarity between biological sequences, and ClustalW, a general purpose multiple sequence alignment program for DNA or proteins. The tutorial contains clear directions and allows the user to see and navigate the NCBI website.
Program Director: Pam Baker, Ph.D.

Summary: Bates College is a private baccalaureate institution in Lewiston, Maine. Its HHMI-funded initiatives include:
- A College Imaging and Computing Center, a multidisciplinary facility which allows students, faculty and staff to create, use, and interpret images and to perform tasks that require intensive computation;
- The Hughes Summer Scholars Program, a math and science summer bridge program that includes labs and a writing seminar for incoming first-year students, including minorities underrepresented in the sciences; and
- A Teacher in Residence program, which enables Maine high school teachers to take science courses and to teach and supervise Bates students interested in teaching math and science.
