HHMI/Harvard University Biological Sciences Multimedia Project
This website from Harvard University contains a series of multimedia "edu-mentaries"™ that cover microarray technology, DNA sequencing, protein analysis, Northern and Southern blotting, and antibodies. The multimedia projects contain video introductions and animations that explain techniques or experiments and also offer historical insights and brief discussions of issues that might arise in the future. The 24-minute microarray technology media project, for example, allows viewers to see how a DNA microarray is constructed, how microarrays are used in various experiments, and how the mountain of data that is generated is analyzed and interpreted. While users can access individual video clips from the different subject areas, they might grasp the content more quickly if they first watch each project's videos from start to finish. The Biological Sciences Multimedia Project is part of a larger Harvard initiative called BioVisions, an effort to find new and powerful ways to communicate ideas in biology.
Program Director: Robert A. Lue, Ph.D.

Award Years: 1992, 1994, 2002, 2006
Summary: Harvard University is a private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Its HHMI-funded initiatives include:
- Curricular innovations that support the university’s review of the entire undergraduate curriculum;
- The Life Sciences-HHMI Outreach Program, a lecture and laboratory series on current biology topics that is designed to enhance the professional lives of high school biology teachers in a three-state area; and
- The ongoing development of BioVisions, a multimedia project that uses animations, such as the award-winning “The Inner Life of the Cell” animation, and videos to present biological processes and techniques in scientifically accurate but engaging ways.
