CASES Online
1 comment

The CASES Online website features a collection of investigative lessons, or "cases," that are designed to engage students in exploring the science behind real-world problems. The cases use the principles of Problem-Based Learning and other student-centered strategies. They cover a wide range of science and mathematics topics for kindergarten through undergraduate students. For example, in “The Case of the Room 116 Blob,” a scenario designed for middle school life science classes, two students encounter a strange substance as they enter their classroom. Students need to determine whether the substance is harmful—or even alive. In "Signed with a Kiss," an investigation for high school chemistry students, a student named Marie finds a sultry note from another girl in her boyfriend's textbook, but a dark pink lipstick kiss is the note's only signature. How can Marie use chemistry to figure out the identity of the mystery girl? Could the girl be one of Marie's friends? All cases contain learning objectives and state and national standards, as well as student handouts and teacher guides with assessment plans and case notes. The cases, which can be searched by subject and grade level, were designed and tested by teachers, students, and faculty associated with curriculum development programs sponsored by the Emory College Center for Science Education. Educators, who must register to access the cases, are encouraged to submit cases of their own to the collection.

"Of the cases that I have viewed, they have already given me new ideas about how to approach various topics. I hope the students will be as excited as I am." Paulette Cole "
