Study Skills Tip Sheets

This series of short tip sheets from Emory College, the undergraduate arts and sciences division of Emory University, is aimed at helping college students, particularly freshmen, succeed in the college environment. Although not geared specifically for science students, the tip sheets offer advice that might be particularly relevant to students in introductory science courses. Topics include understanding learning styles, improving memory and concentration, taking notes, reading with understanding, and preparing for and taking tests. The tips advise students to find and prepare a study space, break projects into smaller chunks, avoid marathon study sessions, read difficult material first, turn notes into study guides that can be used to prepare for tests, and avoid spending too much time on difficult test questions.

Memory and Concentration

Memory and Concentration

Tip #6 urges students to use active learning processes rather than memorize facts. It says that a deeper level of understanding will allow for stronger memory connections.
