Bioscience in the 21st Century

The survey course on this Lehigh University website provides cross-disciplinary perspectives on fundamental issues in contemporary bioscience. Designed to promote life science literacy both for students and the public at large, it uses subject-matter experts to communicate the scope of social and scientific issues confronting the life sciences. Lehigh University faculty from several departments, including biology, chemistry, and physics, as well as computer science, materials science, and engineering, give video lectures, supplemented by PowerPoint presentations, on contemporary issues in neuroscience, reproductive biology, stem cells, bioimaging, genomics, and infectious disease. Other lecturers address social and ethical considerations—such as the methods and ethics of clinical trials. The site contains a syllabus, biographies of the lecturers, and PDFs of the PowerPoint lectures for the fall 2009 course. Videos of the 2009 lectures, as well as those from the 2008 and 2007 series, are available at the university's "iTunes U" site. Users must have iTunes installed on their computers to access the videos that way. However, users can also launch the videos in RealPlayer by clicking on the lecturers' images in the "videos" portion of the site.

Summary:  Lehigh University is a private research institution in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Its HHMI-funded initiatives include:

  • A continuing Bioscience Education Series that brings distinguished scientists to campus annually as “HHMI Visiting Scholars in Biosystems Dynamic,” a program that exposes students to outstanding bioscience research conducted from an integrative, systems perspective;
  • The Biosystems Dynamics Summer Institute, which encourages undergraduates to join interdisciplinary research teams that work together on common problems in genomics, bioinformatics, gene expression, behavioral neuroscience, reproductive biology and other life science issues; and
  • Bioscience in the 21st Century, a survey course with all lectures available on the Web, that was launched as a new approach to advancing student and public literacy about emerging issues in the life sciences.
