Learn.Genetics
This comprehensive website from the University of Utah's Genetic Science Learning Center offers a wide variety of genetics-related interactive and print-based resources for students, teachers, and the public. Teachers, scientists, science writers and educators, and other professionals participated in the development of the website. The 15 topic areas range from DNA to epigenetics. The Where to Begin section provides an animated Tour of the Basics, as well as more in-depth materials on DNA to Protein, Heredity and Traits, and Amazing Cells. The Genetic Disorders Library contains data on Huntington's disease, cystic fibrosis, and other disorders caused by abnormalities in an individual's DNA. In the Virtual Labs section, users can learn and practice basic molecular biology lab techniques, such as DNA extraction and gel electrophoresis. A Genetic Technology section spotlights stem cells and cloning. In the Focus on Health section, a unit on Using Family History to Improve Your Health helps users understand how genetics and lifestyle choices affect their risk, while a unit on Personalized Medicine assists them in understanding the new field of pharmacogenomics. A companion website, Teach.Genetics, which provides extensive resources for educators, is available within this database. Educators may register to receive emails with content updates and professional development opportunities. The Learn.Genetics website was the first winner of the Science Prize for Online Resources in Education, which recognizes outstanding freely available online materials that enrich science education.

Summary: The University of Utah School of Medicine is located in Salt Lake City, Utah. Its HHMI-funded initiatives include:
- An award-winning Learn Genetics website with animations and interactive components, developed by the Genetic Science Learning Center at the University of Utah;
- Professional development courses and workshops for teachers that directly address science standards, update teachers’ knowledge and provide extensive experience with learning techniques, hands-on activities and assessments teachers can use with their students;
- Science enrichment and careers programs for students in grades 5-14 that include year-long and multi-day programs that introduce students to careers in genetics through hands-on activities; and
- A “Genetics for Your Life” project, which is developing inquiry-based, online and classroom curricula that will follow a learning progression from upper elementary school through middle school and into high school.
