Washington University in St. Louis Science Curriculum Website
The many activities on this Science Outreach Curriculum website from Washington University in St. Louis are designed to bring the excitement of investigative science to the K-12 classroom. Teacher-scientist teams have developed and field tested each unit. Lab activities provide information about preparing materials and obtaining resources. The Biology Curriculum, to which HHMI contributed funding, includes three resources contained within this database: Building Food for the Future; Significant Sequences; and Modern Genetics for All Students. The website also contains curricula supported by other funders. A chemistry unit for grades 10-12 deals with the chemical reactions that produce ozone pollution, ozone depletion, CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), and smog. Students in grades 9-10 can learn about ozone from an environmental science perspective. An ecology curriculum for grades 5-6, The Life of a Litterbug, allows students to study communities of pillbugs in the schoolyard or terrarium and develop an understanding of population sampling, population dynamics, resource availability, and carrying capacity. A unit on Aquatic Ecology and Human Impact asks students in grades 8-10 to survey living organisms in a stream or pond to learn how biotic and abiotic factors indicate water quality. A health curriculum for grades 3-5 emphasizes good nutrition, exercise, and healthy lifestyles through activities designed to teach how the human body works. For life science, The Puzzle of Mitosis and Meiosis helps students in grades 7-8 understand cell division, and The Ethogram and Animal Behavior Research unit shows students in grades 5-8 how to build a tool that animal researchers use to categorize all behaviors a species performs. All curricular units are available for free as downloads in Adobe PDF format. Educators are asked to complete a short registration form to access the materials.
The Puzzle of Mitosis and Meiosis
In this activity for Grades 7-8, students learn about cell division by cutting out the pieces and completing the puzzles. The set includes overview pages, pieces, puzzle templates, and large pages for use as visual aids.
