Transmission Genetics Online Module
Transmission Genetics, a new resource from Baylor College of Medicine’s comprehensive website, BioEd Online, is one module of a three-part, interactive Web-based course called Genes, Health and Society. [The course, which explores the rapidly evolving world of genetics and genomics, can be taken free of charge for professional or personal development. Each module stands alone. Educators can work through the modules in sequence or move freely among them.] Transmission Genetics focuses on classic Mendelian genetics and the principles of heredity, the methods and tools used to predict the heritability of a given trait, and ideas about the nature of science and the process of scientific inquiry. Using a case study of Christine and her family’s mysterious ailment, the module emphasizes five major topics: Models of Inheritance; Laws of Inheritance; Working with Crosses; Types of Inheritance; and Pedigrees. After completing all five sections, educators should be able to answer the question: How are physical characteristics transmitted from parents to offspring? To access the course, educators must log in and take a presurvey. During the course, self-assessment questions and problems challenge educators, who, depending on their performance, may choose to access additional review material. Throughout the module, participants use an interactive “course notebook” to answer questions and record observations.

Summary: The Baylor College of Medicine is located in Houston, Texas. Its HHMI-funded educational initiatives include:
- The SELF (Science Education Leadership Fellows) program, which pairs experienced science teachers with Baylor postdoctoral researchers and graduate students in science education improvement teams. These teams help guide the process of science education reform in the Houston Independent School District’s (HISD) elementary schools; and
- An award-winning website, BioEd Online, and a more recently created website, K8 Science, which provide a host of peer-reviewed teaching resources and teacher training for biology teachers nationwide.
