Math Event for Grades 3 and 4: Multiplication and Division Strategies

This curriculum from Oregon State University contains all the tools a teacher or administrator needs to organize a family math program for third- and fourth-grade classes. At the event, a presenter (who can be a teacher or volunteer) leads student-parent groups through a series of games and activities designed to develop concepts and strategies for learning basic multiplication and division facts, as well as solving larger problems. The focus is on listening to children’s mathematical thinking. The presenter goes out into the audience to interview children about their strategies, and parents learn to adjust the level of each game to match their child’s ability. Families take home directions for playing the games (and many additional games), which all use playing cards, and also receive a handout with guidance on “making your child mathematically powerful.” The materials on the website include the presenter’s PowerPoint slides and a guide for timing the presentation, a check list for organizing the event, blacklines for making the board games, and the parents’ handouts, which are available in English and Spanish. The curriculum can be used with one or several classrooms during the school day or in the evening.
