Scientific Foundations for Future Physicians
This 2009 report defines the scientific competencies necessary for future medical school graduates and for undergraduate students who want to pursue a career in medicine. Issued by an expert 22-member committee convened by the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) and HHMI, the report emphasizes the need for competencies rather than required courses; it defines a competency as the knowledge, skill, or attitude that enables an individual to learn and perform in medical practice. The 46-page report outlines 11 overarching principles, eight scientific competencies that students should master before entering medical school, and eight competencies they must demonstrate before completing medical school. By supplementing the competencies with specific learning objectives and examples, the report offers a rough blueprint that educators can use to design premedical and medical school curricula. The committee—which included scientists, physicians, and science educators from small colleges, large universities, and medical schools across the country—says it hopes this report will stimulate a broad discussion within the undergraduate and medical communities that will reinvigorate the scientific preparation of physicians. Summary: This publication is the result of a collaboration between HHMI and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), a not-for-profit association representing all 130 accredited U.S. and 17 accredited Canadian medical schools, nearly 400 major teaching hospitals and health centers, and nearly 90 academic and scientific societies. Through these institutions and organizations, the AAMC represents 125,000 faculty members, 75,000 medical students, and 106,000 resident physicians.
