K8 Science

This website from the Baylor College of Medicine Center for Educational Outreach offers current content and materials to enhance the skills and knowledge of elementary and middle school science teachers. Video, audio, and slide presentations cover important basic concepts—introductions to viruses and human body systems, for example—and give teachers strategies for scientific inquiry and tools to help students conduct investigations. The site has collections of peer-reviewed and annotated PowerPoint slide sets, with speaker’s notes and keywords, on topics of interest to biology teachers. Lesson plans and other classroom activities—such as an activity on “How much water is in a fruit?”—are available by topic and grade level. The site also contains “hot topics” in biology (such as bird flu), editor’s news picks, and news from Baylor College of Medicine’s laboratories. K8 Science is regularly updated with new slides in the slide library, presentations on breakthrough research, reviews, and online short courses on educational approaches and materials.
