Challenges in Understanding and Preventing HIV Transmission Video

This video lecture from the University of Washington’s Molecular Medicine Training Program describes the challenges in understanding and preventing the transmission of HIV—a virus that has infected more than 33 million adults and children around the world. Julie Overbaugh, Ph.D., a member of the Human Biology Division of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, first focuses on the nature of the HIV virus and describes the key steps in HIV replication. She then explains why finding a cure has been so challenging. Because the virus contains an “extraordinary amount of genetic diversity” and mutates so rapidly—enabling it to evade the host’s immune system—developing an effective vaccine has been difficult. In her talk, originally presented as a public lecture for a local audience, including high school students, Dr. Overbaugh also describes her ongoing research with collaborators in Kenya to analyze HIV variants early in infection in cohorts at high risk, especially women and infants. These early HIV strains represent critical targets for vaccine design and provide important insights into how HIV is transmitted. Dr. Overbaugh concludes by describing her research on super-infection (infection by a second source partner after the first HIV infection occurred). Her results have shown that certain HIV-1-positive women may be at greater risk for re-infection than previously believed. The UW Molecular Medicine Training Program’s website contains videos of other public science lectures, with new videos added as lectures take place.

Summary:  The University of Washington is a public research university in Seattle, Washington. Its Molecular Medicine Training Program, funded by HHMI's Med into Grad Program, provides Ph.D. students with training that integrates fundamental principles of biology with human health and disease. The program incorporates three key elements: case-based courses, a clinical rotation in human genetics or a medical pathology course, and dual mentorship of Ph.D. research by a basic scientist and a clinically trained or clinically oriented research scientist.
