Lom Lab Protocols

This website from Davidson College contains lab protocols for a developmental neurobiology group investigation research course that have been annotated by students. The protocols involve general lab maintenance (including information about ordering supplies and using routine lab equipment), recipes for solutions used in the lab, and microscopy (including instructions on using and maintaining a confocal microscope and other microscopes). This website also contain protocols for the care of, and experimental techniques for, zebrafish, and protocols for Xenopus care and specific experimental techniques (immunostaining, dissociated eyebud cultures, and microinjection). Anyone can browse the protocols, many of which have images or videos that help describe the techniques. The students’ annotations often add valuable information and advice that reflect their experiences with the protocols. Summary:  Davidson College is a private baccalaureate institution in Davidson, North Carolina. Its HHMI-funded initiatives include:

  • The use of multiple strategies to engage students in the biomedical sciences, including the creation of a community of mentors and peers to carry students beyond the gateway year;
  • An intensive summer laboratory “bridge” experience for rising high school seniors from underrepresented groups that prepares them for the challenges of college introductory biology courses by teaching them basic laboratory techniques and scientific methodology; and
  • Support for the collaborative Genomic Consortium for Active Teaching (GCAT), which has helped produce new cadres of student researchers, primarily by introducing powerful DNA microarray methodology into the undergraduate curriculum at more than 160 institutions in the United States and Canada.
