Research Abstract
Job Summary:
An exciting opportunity exists to join a laboratory at Harvard Medical School investigating the mechanisms of hearing at the molecular level. The goal of the research is to understand the proteins that are essential for converting sounds into neural signals, and how they may malfunction in inherited deafness. This new position is full time; however, highly qualified candidates interested in a part-time schedule also will be considered.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Manage a multi-line mouse colony. Includes breeding, culling and genotyping animals and maintaining database
- Interact with a ~15 person laboratory to manage the knockout mouse needs of multiple projects
- Prepare and maintain DNA stocks
- Dissect and prepare tissues from mouse inner ears
- Carry out tissue culture of cell lines and dissected tissues
- Work occasional times on evenings or weekends if breeding times require
Preferred Qualifications:
- B.S. and/or M.S. in Biology or a related field
- Knowledge of basic genetics
- Experience (3-5 years) with animal husbandry and PCR genotyping
- Hands-on training in basic DNA manipulation such as restriction digests, ligations, and maxi-preps
- Strong communication, organization and record-keeping skills
- Familiarity with database software such as Excel or Filemaker
- Ability to interact effectively and simultaneously with a large group
- Ability to work independently with little supervision
