Job Summary:

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute is seeking a highly motivated Laboratory Manager to supervise and perform technical and administrative tasks in one of its laboratories at the University of Pennsylvania.

The job will consist of both lab management responsibilities and working with mice. As a part of general lab management, the individual will oversee equipment maintenance and ensure adequate supplies for experimental needs, assist the Investigator in personnel management which includes hiring, training, and coordinating the undergraduate team. He or she will manage the lab safety programs to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, assist with laboratory space and facilities planning, make recommendations for changes and maintain inventory of laboratory equipment. The Laboratory Manager will serve as liaison to HHMI and host institution administrative offices.

A strong candidate for this position will also have obtained training and experience in basic techniques in handling small rodent animals and will provide technical assistance for animal research projects.

Principal Responsibilities:

 

  • Manage day-to-day activities within the research laboratory, including such activities as ensuring operation of essential equipment, making sure adequate supplies are available for routine experimental procedures, reviewing budgets, etc.
  • Act as liaison between lab and HHMI and host institution administrative offices on issues such as budget management, fixed asset inventories, purchasing, use of host accounts, etc.
  • Act as liaison between lab and host safety and regulatory offices to insure compliance with all applicable regulations.
  • May develop laboratory guidelines; maintain procedures manuals; and /or evaluate new materials and equipment. May carry out research project.
  • Train incoming personnel in proper lab conduct. May instruct in experimental protocols.
  • Maintain a large number of mouse colonies and perform routine surgical procedures, including preparing protocols for projects on mice, genotyping, injection, dissecting and tissue harvesting.
  • Perform duties of a Research Technician II as required.
  • Preferred Qualifications:

     

  • Bachelor's degree in life or physical sciences.
  • Three or more years’ lab experience including at least one year's supervisory experience and work with mice.
  • Operational knowledge of advanced lab equipment.
  • Ability to supervise others.
  • Ability to initiate and compose communications for various purposes in appropriate styles.
  • In depth knowledge in a specific area and general knowledge in broad areas of responsibility.
  • In-depth understanding of organizational structure both within and outside the work unit, including the role of each position in the group and in other groups.
  • Ability to review goals, analyze processes necessary to achieve those goals, and develop techniques and systems required to meet those goals.
  • Often explores new areas and seeks opportunities to apply new knowledge to work.
