Reports To:
VP & Executive Director, JFRC
Job Summary:
The Janelia Farm Research Campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute seeks an exceptional individual to lead a world-class technology effort in advanced computation, data analysis, and instrumentation design and fabrication. The Director of Janelia's Advanced Computation and Technology group is responsible for leading an array of data-driven technology teams, ranging from data acquisition to data analysis. In collaboration with Janelia research scientists, this person must drive a strategic vision and set priorities for focused investment of effort in sophisticated engineering and computational technology, enabling Janelia's two scientific goals:(1) understanding the basic mechanisms used by nervous systems to store and process information and (2) developing new methods for image acquisition and analysis. This individual may not necessarily be a neuroscientist or even a biologist themselves; rather, the ideal individual will have extensive technical and engineering expertise in some area of large-scale data analysis, while being excited about applying this expertise in fundamental neuroscience research.
Principal Responsibilities:
This is a scientific director level position, roughly comparable to a chief technology officer, reporting directly to Janelia Farm's Executive Director. Lead a team of technical professionals, with an overall size of approximately 40, including five to six managers of individual teams in instrument design and fabrication; high performance computing, storage, and networking; scientific software and algorithm development; and scientific data analysis and visualization. Collaborate with Janelia's research scientists to enable large-scale data acquisition and analysis, including development of automated robotic instrumentation systems, for data types that include 3D reconstruction of neuronal anatomy at both the light and electron microscope level ("connectomes"), functional imaging and electrical recording of large populations of neurons, high-speed and/or long-term video analysis of animal behavior, and genomic sequence analysis of individual neuronal cell types. Assist in recruiting other world-class computational and data scientists to Janelia. Liase with external collaborative partners and contractors in software development, hardware development, and large scale data analysis, working with other leaders in academia, industry, and government research laboratories worldwide. Coordinate the strategic scope, design, acquisition, and management of Janelia's high performance computing, storage, and networking resources. Manage priorities, budget, and performance of the overall advanced computing and technology team.
Preferred Qualifications:
Education:
- PhD or equivalent experience required, preferably in a research area relevant to large-scale data analysis, such as computer engineering, statistics, and/or applied mathematics.
- More than ten years’ experience being responsible for large-scale data analysis and/or acquisition in a research oriented environment is required.
- More than ten years’ experience managing and directing a team of highly skilled, technical professionals and/or managers is preferred, preferably in an area of computational or data-driven science.
- Experience with creating and managing large, complex research budgets is preferred.
- Ability to develop technology strategy, set engineering priorities, and coordinate software and hardware development efforts in pursuit of basic scientific research goals.
- Ability to lead and recruit highly skilled staff, and to collaborate as a scientific peer with world class researchers.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with experience in collaboration with domain expert research scientists.
- Ability to manage significant capital and facility resources, including high performance computing systems and an instrument fabrication shop.
- Ability to recognize opportunities to access or build advanced new technology platforms for research, including establishing collaborations with other leading computational science, data analysis, and scientific instrumentation design efforts in the world.
- Strong project management skills.
