In mid-March, when the British epidemic of hoof-and-mouth disease (HMD) appeared to be spiraling out of control, the government appealed to the country's scientists for help. Among those who answered the call was Neil Ferguson at the Imperial College School of Medicine in London, an HHMI international research scholar who develops mathematical models of infectious diseases.   continued...
