In one corner of Bob Braun's bright, cluttered lab, Gabriella Puente stares intently at her computer screen, hands on her normally smiling cheeks, shoulders slumped in concentration under an oversized white lab coat.

At a nearby lab bench, Gideon Logan holds a vial and pipette at eye level with blue-gloved hands, hoping despite multiple failures that this time his antibody will work.
