In the basement of the Foege Building on the campus of the University of Washington, the DNA of a woman known only as G248 lies in thousands of tiny wells inside a freezer cooled to –84°C.

Five floors above, HHMI investigator Evan E. Eichler points to her DNA as the harbinger of a new way of thinking about human genetics.
