In today's typical family, the whirl of work, school, extracurricular activities, and driving, driving, driving leaves little time for sitting down to a healthy meal—and even less time for serious exercise.

It's no wonder that obesity and diabetes have reached epidemic proportions. In response, scientists are delving into the genes and proteins that control the flow of energy in our bodies, and they're making surprising connections to exercise. Their findings could lead to drugs that fight diabetes and obesity by mimicking a vigorous workout.
