Tian Xu taps a button on his remote control and looks up at the 4-foot-wide screen on his office wall at the Yale School of Medicine. The image that flickers on—showing a desktop stacked with files and half-finished dia
grams—could be any scientist's cubicle. Except that the scene is 7,400 miles away, in China.

Xu pokes at the control to swivel a distant webcam and focus on the face of a scientific collaborator, Xiaohui Wu, a mouse researcher at Fudan University in Shanghai. “This is fantastic,” says the bespectacled Xu, testing the sound level as he prepares for a teleconference. “It's like I'm sitting in Shanghai.”
