In 1983, a bright, good-natured five-year-old named Lorenzo Odone began to slur his words, throw temper tantrums, fall down, and lose his hearing.

His doctor diagnosed him with cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy, or ALD, a devastating hereditary nerve-damaging disease that strikes young boys. The prognosis was grim: Within a year, cerebral ALD robs boys of their eyesight, hearing, and ability to move and speak; most die by age 14.
