The discovery of natural selection was both a triumph and a burden for Charles Darwin. Through careful observations of the living world, he concluded that most organisms have many more offspring than can survive.

Those offspring with advantageous characteristics tend to live while others succumb to disease, are eaten by predators, or otherwise fail to reproduce.
