When Intel comes out with a new microprocessor, its competitors' inquisitive engineers soon have that chip under a microscope, figuring out how the device works by tracing the patterns of transistors on its surface.

Dmitri Chklovskii, a group leader at HHMI's Janelia Farm Research Campus, is applying much the same technique to fruit flies.
