This animation describes the set of chromosomes usually found in humans.
DNA is organized into structures called chromosomes. As shown in the animation, most humans have a total of 46 chromosomes in each cell: 22 pairs of matching chromosomes (autosomes) and one pair of sex chromosomes (allosomes).
Depending on students’ background, it may be helpful to pause the animation at various points to discuss different types of chromosomes.
