Tips From Teachers

“Ken Miller's lecture has two segments I use to reduce some students' anxiety when it comes to learning about evolution. In chapters 14 and 27 of the lecture, Miller explains how he reconciles his religious faith with evolution. The five minutes or so it takes to explain the central role of evolution in biology and show these two clips can be time well spent at the beginning of a course. It shows students that science and religion need not be in conflict, gives students a 'place to stand' if they are experiencing conflict, and it communicates your respect for students' beliefs. I find that this allows students to be more receptive to lessons on evolution.” -- Bob Cooper (Pennsbury High School, PA)
