A key to success in science is knowing how to ask the right question. Richard Lifton,
an expert on the genetics of hypertension, says, "You need some smarts; you need some
creativity and you also need to be practical in a sense of being able to identify problems
that are not only interesting, but in fact, are solvable." Before carrying out an experiment,
Lifton notes, researchers should think carefully about its purpose and design, asking: "How
am I going to get there; how am I going to come up with the ability to solve the problem?"
