Becoming a Scientist
Don Ganem

Don't be afraid. That's what Don Ganem, whose research team studies pathogenic human viruses, says to students who are thinking of pursuing a career in science. "What was the most important for me," Ganem says, "was to get over the fear that you weren't smart enough, or the fear that this was something that you couldn't do." Other traits, such as self-discipline and tenacity, are also necessary, but it's not essential to be superhuman. "People have a greater capacity to do this than they think," Ganem says.
