There's no single formula for success in science, says B. Brett Finlay, a Canadian
expert on how dangerous microbes can infect our bodies. "The personalities of scientists
are very different," he observes. "When you go to a meeting and you meet 10 scientists,
they'll be very different people."
What scientists share, according to Finlay, is a desire to learn new things, a love
of experiments and a burning desire to explore nature's secrets. "A career in science
is something that doesn't just happen," he says. "You have to go about and really fashion it."
