Laboratory Safety

Laboratory safety is an integral part of HHMI's scientific research mission. The Institute strives to set an exemplary standard for safe and sensible laboratory practice.

HHMI works in partnership with the environmental health and safety programs at each HHMI host institution. Its goals are to

  1. Create and maintain a safe and healthful research environment

  2. Teach safe work practices

  3. Promote safety awareness

  4. Ensure a laboratory safety program that complements science

The environmental health and safety programs of the HHMI host institutions provide essential services in support of the Institute's research activities. These include:

  1. Authorizing the purchase, storage, and use of radioisotopes

  2. Collection, transport, and disposal of hazardous wastes

  3. Regulatory compliance activities

  4. Training and technical assistance

  5. Laboratory consultations
