Dame Alison F. Richard, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, was trained as an anthropologist. She spent 30 years at Yale University before going to Cambridge, where she is the first woman to serve as the chief academic officer and administrator of the university.

Dame Alison F. Richard was elected a trustee of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in 2008.
