Studies Aim to Preempt Resistance to New Class of Cancer Drugs
August 12, 2008
Researchers have begun scouring cancer cells for potential sites of resistance against a promising new class of drugs currently under development. Their goal is to identify resistance mutations in the lab, before they arise in patients. Moresmall arrow

Scientists Manipulate Group Behavior in Bacteria
August 08, 2008
Researchers have shown that bacterial communication can be intercepted and chemically manipulated to control group behavior, such as virulence or the production of a useful products. Moresmall arrow

Scientists Replicate Diseases in the Lab with New Stem Cell Lines
August 07, 2008
Researchers have converted cells from individuals with ten different diseases, including muscular dystrophy, juvenile diabetes, and Parkinson's disease, into stem cells. These cells will allow researchers to reproduce human tissue formation in a Petri dish as it occurs in individuals with any of the diseases. Moresmall arrow

Researchers Identify Hundreds of Human Genes that Impact West Nile Infection
August 06, 2008
Scientists have identified more than 300 human genes that influence West Nile virus infection. More than 20 of these cooperate with the virus, whereas the others help cells resist it. Moresmall arrow

David Clayton to Retire as VP for Research Operations
August 01, 2008
Clayton, who joined HHMI in 1996, has announced that he will retire on August 31. Moresmall arrow

So Many Genes, So Little Time
August 01, 2008
Researchers have used new technology to pinpoint a critical gene mutation in worms in only a few weeks. It would have taken years for scientists using older technology to sift through the worm's DNA until they found the proverbial needle in the haystack. Moresmall arrow

Newly Identified Genetic Deficiency in Children Illuminates Immune System Breakdown
July 31, 2008
Children with meningitis and other serious infections need swift treatment with antibiotics to survive, but physicians have not been able to figure out why the same microbe causes some children to get seriously ill and not others. Now researchers have identified a genetic defect that makes these children susceptible to attack by a certain type of bacteria, a finding that will speed up the diagnosis and treatment of these sick children. Researchers Identify Drugs that Enhance Exercise Endurance
July 31, 2008
HHMI researchers have identified two drugs that mimic many of the physiological effects of exercise. The drugs increase the ability of cells to burn fat and are the first compounds that have been shown to enhance exercise endurance. Moresmall arrow

Researchers Discover Key Gene for Making Motor Neurons
July 25, 2008
Researchers have revealed an important step in the process that guides the early development of neurons as they establish precise connections between the spinal cord and muscles. Moresmall arrow

Eye Movement Disorder Caused by Improper Development of Motor Neurons
July 24, 2008
An international team of researchers has identified a gene mutated in Duane syndrome, a common disorder that restricts the movement of the eyes. Moresmall arrow
